How we calculate our numbers

Every pay and hiring figure on this site comes from the same method. This page describes it. Each page also shows the date its figures were last built.

What we count

Remote job postings in the United States that state pay. We receive them from a licensed job data feed. A posting without a stated pay range is left out of every pay figure.

Experience bands

We sort each posting into one of three bands, using the years of experience the posting itself states.

  • 2 to 5 years
  • 5 to 10 years
  • 10 or more years

We do not guess a band for a posting that does not state one. Every figure is computed within one band and never mixes bands. Where we show 5 to 10 and 10 or more together, the page labels it.

Why 2 to 5 year postings appear differently

Our 2 to 5 year postings are a monthly sample, not a full count. So they appear only as pay figures, each with its own posting count. They are never used in counts of how many postings exist. Employer pages use postings asking for 5 or more years only.

How pay is calculated

Pay is the midpoint of the posted annual range. When a posting states hourly, weekly, or monthly pay, we convert it to a yearly amount first. We then report the median of those midpoints.

Removing duplicates

Employers often post one job many times. We remove exact duplicates. We also count postings with the same employer, the same band, and the same pay range once, because those are usually copies of one template across cities or teams. Employer names are normalized so that variants such as Inc and LLC are treated as one employer.

Minimum size

We publish a figure only when it rests on at least 30 postings. If a role, band, or employer has fewer, we show no figure. An employer's own median also needs at least 10 different pay ranges, so one template posted many times cannot set it.

Role families

A role family groups the titles for one kind of work. Where the work has steps, such as senior, lead, manager, and director, the page labels each step. A posting counts once, in its highest step.

Skill groups

We group skills that postings list together. We show a pay difference for a skill group only when seniority is held constant, meaning the comparison is inside one band and one role. Otherwise a skill group could look valuable only because it appears in more senior jobs.

Posted pay is an offer

These numbers are what employers posted. They are not what people earn. Final pay can be higher or lower after negotiation, and some employers state a range wider than they will pay. Sales postings may state base pay or on-target pay, which includes expected commission, and we do not yet separate the two.

Freshness

Figures are updated when we rebuild them, not continuously. Every page shows the date of its last build. Postings that have closed since then can still be in the figures.

Job postings and links

We do not republish job postings. Employer pages summarize counts and pay and link to the employer. To apply, go to the employer.

What these figures cannot tell you

They cover remote US postings that state pay. They do not cover jobs that hide pay, jobs in other countries, or jobs that are never posted. They reflect who chooses to state pay, which can differ from the whole market.
